Last night, I went to see Maza Blaska and Way Yes at Woodlands. It was so surprising to find such a small crowd for such a good local set. By the time Ladycop went on, around midnight, everyone but a few members of the other bands had left. Of course, I was probably the only one who didn't know there was a tornado on the way. I super-enjoyed ladycop though. You couldn't tell by watching them that they were only playing for like 4 or five people.

So,... I just wanted to share Ladycop with everyone so you could be sure to catch them the next time they're here. Listen to they're record on bandcamp too... Super enjoyable album to listen too. I kinda want to say more about it, but I'm more interested in what others think of it first. So, comment and let me know what you think!

I'm not going to pretend to review this album with a lot of words. It's an honest, upbeat record that sounds great. I'm sure it's brought a lot of joy to peoples lives the past few weeks. I will say... my favorite part of the album is ekg and bluejay. especially from around 3:40 on in ekg. beautiful.

Olivia's B-day party today! She turns 4 on tues. but, we wanted to eat cake today. We're going cowgirl style this year, w/ some classic pin the tail on the horsey. I can't believe she's 4! Doesn't make me feel old. Actually, in a way, it makes me feel young. We've got a lot of good years ahead of us. I love comparing the difference between her and I. She's so much cooler then I was as a kid. She's so fun, and cares for everyone around her. She's growing up to be an awesome young lady.

And life goes on... I'm not playing with Blank Birds anymore. Everyone is cool.... just in different walks of life. Got hard to be on the same page.

I am, however, starting a new project with my friend Micah. We're calling it Glass & Gold. It might take a little bit to get things together... but, keep your eye out for some new music this year. I'll be doing a solo record with Heath West again before getting to dirty with Glass & Gold, so look out for that too. It'll be a 12 song record of an almost "country feel"

Bigshot is going great. I love the guys I play with. We're finishing up an E.P. shortly, which I'm really looking forward too. Hopefully we'll have some shows lined up after it's done.

Of Course things never go just as planned... but these are the things I'm looking forward too right now musically. I'm feeling super motivated... I really miss that feeling.

I have to say... I'm really enjoying life right now. There's a lot of really stressful things happening, but a lot of great things too. I'm playing in two bands along with my solo stuff.... the photography realm is very promising... and I have a beautiful family. I'm really wanting to record an album still. Someone offered to do it for me, I just don't know if I can find the time. I feel like the songs are dying, but I'm sure I'm just being dramatic. A lot is happening. (hence this post being so jumbled) I do feel like I will look back on my life now and think of them as the good ole' days. I'm blessed to have a lot of those seasons in life.

I should start posting more again soon. Had some stressful personal stuff happening and then the family just took a family vacation to VA Beach to hang with my Dad for thanksgiving. (very nice)

More Pics of Old Worlds. Played a show with the and Blank Birds the other night at The Treehouse. It's good to have consistent people to play shows with. These guys are fun. Sorry didn't get a photo of you, mike. I literally took like... 10 photos and that's it. I told myself I was going to practice shooting and then got stuck in a conversation. I especially wanted to get some shots of the new bass player though. I think he adds a lot to your guy's sound.

I forgot your name, but thanks bass player for letting me use your amp. It sounds great and was really fun to play. I can't believe you actually got it for the price you did. I hate you... (kidding of course)

Though quitting Starbucks has been one of the best decisions I've made, I can't say the thought of going back hasn't crossed my mind. Being a stay at home dad is hard. And not having a stable income myself (my wife makes the bucks) just makes me feel worthless. I know I'm not worthless, but it sure feels that way. I have been praying for a long time for God to show me what I'm supposed to be doing and I don't think Starbucks is it. Right now I'm just trying to put myself in a situation where He is providing. I'm trying to put myself in situations where I can take pictures of what I want to and write/play music. Really I'm trying to let God do that for me. Giving Him the space. If everything had gone according to plan.... I would have recorded a full length album by the end of 2009. I guess I could have forced the issue. But, I don't think I would have enjoyed the record as much. When God touches something it becomes better. So, I'm not going to go back to Starbucks. I'm not going to record a crappy record just for the sake of doing it. I'm going to wait and see what happens.

So, I really should have been doing homework. It started out that way, but didn't end that way. Just playing. It's really hard focus in the summer. I just wanted to have a drink and try to take a good photo. If I'm going to be honest with myself, I have to say that I used gray scale because there was a color balance issue. But, I do like the black and white. I just think it works well in this photo. My brother did Jan's tattoo and I think I'd like to do a series of tattoo's he's done in this type of gray scale portrait. Easier said than done, but you never know. We'll just have to throw a party or something.

Just a side note: Last minute show tonight at THE TREEHOUSE. Seeing off Jonathan Hape as he heads off for tour. If you can't make it tonight, come to wild goose tomorrow night!

Taking pictures is actually a great way to relax. It beats sitting in front of a t.v. It's even more relaxing when you like the photos you're taking.

I'm going to start doing a photo of the week. I guess it could end up being photo of the month, or maybe even photo of the day, but there will be a photo of the ____. I have two goals and they're fairly simple, but still take practice. Find aesthetically pleasing light and try to get some flow in the color balance.

These photos were taken on a walk to the co-op to get some treats for Jan and I. I've found there's a lot of cool stuff in allies, especially here in Clintonville. I've noticed I do that a lot though. I look for cool stuff instead of cool light. It's a balance sure, but I know in order for me to be so excited to get home to look at my new photos, the light has to be there. I just know it's what I like to look at.

This was the first time I've done a wedding alone. I've followed / shadowed and assisted on weddings, but never photographed one by myself. I was a little intimidated, but I became more confident as the day progressed. There are some some I need to work on and some stuff I felt proud of, but at the end of the day, I had a lot of fun. I think Ryan and Ashley had a lot of fun too. Congrats, guys!

Blank Birds

This is my one of my good friends, Jonathan DePazo's band. He has been a songwriter in the Columbus area for awhile now. I see Jonny as a diamond in the rough. I don't think he gets nearly the attention he deserves simply because he refuses to allow people to treat him as an accessory. He is emotional about it, so if he ever opens a set with something like "Ok, we're starting now. Cancel the pool Game" don't take offense.

Blank Birds is a new band. They played their first show the other night at Ruby Tuesdays and I thought it was great. They started playing anxiously. "Let's go, Let's go!" The energy they provided to the crowd even at first glance, was in your face fantastic. People stood up, and made their way to stand at front of the stage, anticipating the sound. I'm not a great writer, so it's hard for me to describe what they sound like here. You'll just have to check them out sometime.

There were some normal "first show" things happening with tempo and interaction with each other, but with their style, and how they interacted with the crowd deterred anyone from paying any attention to it. Besides, I've listened to plenty of bands that people made fun of, or judged and a few years later they're blow-your-mind good. Can't wait to hear what Blank Birds will be like a year or two from now. I more than enjoy Blank Birds.

Website is up and running now. I had a hard time deciding if I really wanted to go ahead and do it, but I decided it would be best, even though there are not a lot of galleries, images, so on. I think I'll enjoy building portfolios more this way. It really is a work in progress. someday, I would like to incorporate a photography and music website together with the blog kinda linking the two. It's a little to much work to do right now, but the idea is that I can inspire and motivate myself. I'm super excited about this. I can't wait to get out and take more pictures and do some recording. I'll be staying home with the girls now that Jan has a full-time job. Life is good.

So, it has been exactly one year since my brother, Chris, killed himself. I guess I'll never look at new years the same. I've been trying to reflect on what has happened in the past year and I can't.... It's like everything and nothing has happened all at the same time. I guess now that this is actually leaving my mind, everything has changed since 1-1-09. Chris is gone, I started school, Lucy was born, my brother Zach and his girlfriend are having a baby, I recorded an EP, fell in Love with photography, wrestled with God more then ever before, been more numb to God then ever before, prayed less than ever before, read less than ever before, wrote less than ever before, Jan started working, experienced depression for the first time (i think), and came to a larger understanding of the importance of Love, though, I feel I've done a worse job of loving people while, I felt more Loved by people. phew. I guess I can't reflect because I've just been left stunned. I don't know if I have grown as a person. I guess in some ways I have, and some ways I haven't. I was hit by a ton of bricks, shook it off, blinked, and now 2009 is over.

It amazes me how cool photographers are. A really sweet photographer let me borrow a lens I was thinking of getting. This was after taking a sweet portrait of my family. That night, I got home late and had to wake up early but, had to at least try out the lens for a few minutes. So, I went out on my porch to try and capture the first real snow of the season. I had a great, relaxing time on my front porch with a glass of wine at 2am.

The Girls are getting big. They love being sisters with each other. Being a Dad is Crazy Awesome. Yes, really awesome, but really crazy. Makes me feel old. (At least older) I know I'm not old. Life can just flat out be crazy. But, if crazy is the norm, that what do we call that? Everyone's life is full of surprises. Some good and some bad. I can't say I know anyone who doesn't have anything big going on in their life right now. Just epic journeys. But again, if everyone's journey is "epic", is it really epic? Crazy becomes normal. It doesn't feel normal. I can recognize that. I guess it's just a crazy world, right?

I didn't realized it'd been so long since I wrote on here. I guess blogging isn't really my thing anyway. Sometimes it's better than walking up the stairs to get my journal. It's amazing to look back on all that's gone on in the past 8 months. I won't list them because it could result in just complaining. And I know I'm not the only one going through a lot. There are so many people at Central V. going through stuff. And friends outside of church too. I will say, I'm still learning a lot about who I am. There are two major things I'm wrestling with right now:

The first is Chris's death. I'm still in... denial i guess. Last night I went out to take some pics for a school project and ended up not taking any. Instead, I drove by Chris's Apartment. I don't even know what I was looking for! Maybe a feeling? I don't want to let go of these feelings. Even if they are of sadness. Sometimes I even pretend as if I'm waiting for him to come over. What he would talk about. How he would greet me. Or I pretend as if I'm driving over to his place for a good beverage and conversation. He was one of my favorite people to have a conversation with. His things that I have claimed don't keep the feeling. They're just becoming my things. That's sad.

The second is the relationship between school, work and music. If there is one thing I've learned from pursuing photography, it's that I'm a musician. I don't think that's bad, though. I think you've got to get out and do other things if you want to be a good songwriter. If not, you're in danger of becoming extremely cliche. There are some sweet similarities between photography and music. The craftsmanship. The patience. Good things for someone like myself to learn. I guess what I mean is that I still feel very young. A big misconception with song-writing (maybe photography?) is that you have to own a certain wisdom or you don't have anything to write about, which is completely untrue. There have been countless times where I've written something, forgotten about it, revisit it later and somehow my brain or mind has progressed enough over time that I can then solve the question or feeling, or sometimes I even have the answer ready. I learn not only from other's songs, I learn from my own too. Now, I'm trying to do the same with a photograph which is a completely different thing. It's more natural for me to pick up a guitar.

Anyway... Looking forward to spring. I've never FELT a winter like this. I'm ready for spring. Birds. Green. Porches. Bikes. Flip-flops. Ice coffee and patios. Walks to the community market with my ladies. I guess I've only experienced the cold Clintonville. I like it. Just ready for spring. I'm sure most of us are.

So, it's how it goes. I remember sitting in front of ticketmaster.com wondering if I really should spend the money on the radiohead show aug. 4th. We spent over $100 on tickets for Jan and I to go. (phew, I'm glad I got that off my chest.) I was so excited, but uneasy at the same time. So, time moved on and I got over it. We're going with some good friends and it should be a good time. But, now of course there's a catch. A potentially bad decision coming back to bite me in the butt. I've been waiting for the new Ours record "mercy" and they're coming back to columbus. It's only $15 a ticket and it's right down the street. I was so excited and guess what! you guessed it. August 4th. I will spend a good penny on gas, food, and parking. (And that's after the ticket.) And though I love radiohead, Ours may put on just as good a show, in a far more intimate setting. Honestly after reading about how environmentally conscious radiohead has become. I'm wondering if they might kick me in the teeth, for driving all the way to cleveland. Oh well. I'll get over it. Live and Learn. Although Ours is playing in Cleveland Aug. 5th. Maybe Jan and I just need a solid 2 day vacation.

Why I Like Music

Music is productive, creative, art, honest, a persona, Fun, uniting, defining, mysterious, enlightening, history, the future, bold, dangerous, our safe place, confusing, convincing, influential, a stress reliever, stressful, a teacher, giving, worship, growing, searching, finding, living, reflecting, connecting, maturing, and for all ages. It's another level of communication.

Why I like working in a Coffee Shop.

So, I find I really like working in Coffee shops. I think, for most people, coffee shop jobs are something to stay afloat with while they figure out what they want to do, or prepare to do it. Not many people decide they want to be a barista forever, but I think I might. I do like coffee, but I think the real reason I'd like to make it my vocation was revealed to me in a book I'm reading. Doesn't really have much to do with the book, but kind of.

A friend lent my Simply Christian by N. T. Wright. In chapter 4 he talks about the complexity and simplicity in human life and how it can be defined by the interweaving of telling stories, acting out rituals, creating beauty, working in our communities, and thinking out beliefs. The instant I read those lines it clicked in my head... this is why I love working in coffee shops! It's not one specific thread or moment in time, but a series of stories, rituals (coffee is a bit of a ritual itself), artists, a community working all around me, all allowing me to work out thoughts and beliefs while hearing from others. It is one of the true decompartmentalising (Ok, I made up that word) places in my life. There's not many places like a coffee shop. A place for ritual, either alone in thoughtful awareness, or with good company. There are always new people with new stories to tell. There is labor behind the bar, but all in all, it's the same. I don't make much money (probably a good thing), but my families needs are met which is all I could ask for. I guess it allows me to enjoy life to the full. The only reason I can think of to change occupations would be for the sake of title. "The Day Convenience Took Over" is a song I wrote a while ago. I wrote it when we lived in Washington Courthouse, OH before Olivia was born. We lived across a field from the church we were "attending". It was great to be able to wake up and walk across the field to church. Eventually though, we got lazy. We would get in the car and drive a further distance at the same amount of time it would have taken us to walk. Then one day the city started tearing up the field to build a school. Of course, I was really upset because we "couldn't" walk anymore. For some reason this was a big metaphor in my life. (As opposed to getting hit by a car a few months ago.) For some reason it's the little things that teach me the most. So, I guess the reason I named the blog after this song is because I'd like to spend some time being productive rather then criticizing everything. (which I'm not very good at anyway)
